Swimming Teacher Courses

STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Teaching

The STA Award in Teaching Swimming is the perfect step to begin your exciting career as a swimming teacher and with no previous experience required, you can get started right away.

When You Get Your Qualification

  • You will be able to gain employment as a swimming teacher, teaching non-swimmers to improver participants
  • You’ll be qualified to deliver up to the Goldfish stage of STA’s progressive International Learn to Swim Programme 
  • Access free STA online support and resources which are helpful for new and experienced teachers
  • Your course resource manual will act as a guide throughout your swimming teaching journey—always there to refer back to should you ever need it
  • Receive advice and guidance from the STA team who will support you throughout your swimming teaching journey.



  

Holders of the endorsed STA Award in Teaching Swimming qualification can:

  • Teach the essential swimming skills, water safety and all four key strokes to participants
  • Deliver the STAnley series of awards up to the Goldfish series of STA’s International Learn to Swim Programme (ILSP)
  • Teach the four key strokes and skills to participants up to stage 7 of Swim England’s Learn to Swim Programme, excluding poolside diving*
  • Teach the four key strokes and skills to participants up to Swim Skills 3 of Scottish Swimming Learn to Swim Framework
  • Teach the four key strokes and skills to participants up to Wave 3 of Swim Wales Learn to Swim Wales


*Diving is an advanced swimming skill and covered within the STA Certificate in Teaching Swimming qualification and therefore, STA Award in Teaching Swimming holders can teach the strokes up to this stage as well as the other skills including treading water, sculling etc but their qualification will not permit them to teach diving.

To remain as an STA-approved swimming teacher, and to receive the benefit of STA public liability insurance, you’ll be required to:

  • Remain in membership of STA
  • Keep your knowledge and skills up-to-date with regular CPDs
  • Regularly update your DBS check

  • Develops the vocational skills and technical knowledge of a qualified swimming teacher, allowing you to independently teach your very own class of 12 participants from non-swimmers up to improvers (children and adults).

How to take your Swimming Teaching Career Further

Once qualified, progress on your teaching pathway by achieving the STA Certificate in Teaching Swimming—the next step which meets CIMSPA’s employer-led swimming teacher professional standard.

Additionally you may wish to expand your swimming teaching portfolio by teaching those with disabilities or baby and pre-school participants with our People with Disabilities and Baby and Pre-School Award qualifications.

Pre-requisites to join the course

* 16 years of age prior to the exam date (last day of the course)

Swimming Teacher Training

STA Level 2 Certificate in Swimming Teaching

Progress on your teaching pathway with the STA Certificate in Teaching Swimming—the next step which meets CIMSPA’s employer-led swimming teacher professional standard.


The qualification will expand your expertise to teach competitive strokes, survival and rescue skills, diving, competitive starts and turns; allowing you to teach non-swimmers through to advanced participants.


Interested? Before You Get Started…

You’ll need to make sure you’ve met the following requirements before you attend your course:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Hold current membership of STA 
  • Hold the STA Award in Teaching Swimming qualification or acceptable equivalent (please note the Swim England Level 1 Award in Aquatic Teaching is not an acceptable pre-requisite)

When You Get Your Qualification

  • Teach the full range of the International Learn to Swim Programme  independently, from non-swimmers to advanced participants
  • Access free online support and resources which are helpful for new and experienced teachers
  • Your course resource manual will act as a guide throughout your swimming teaching journey—always there to refer back to should you ever need it
  • Receive advice and guidance from the STA team who will support you throughout your swimming teaching journey.

How to take your Swimming Teaching Career Further

Once qualified, expand your swimming teaching portfolio by teaching those with disabilities or baby and pre-school participants with our People with Disabilities and Baby and Pre-School Award qualifications.

You can also enhance your knowledge further and maintain your occupational competency by exploring STA’s broad range of online learning CPDs.
